Hytale model or texture not showing? Causes and fixes

Most problems with a custom Hytale model come down to a few causes: the texture is not paired with the model, the model opened in the wrong format, a definition points at the wrong file, or the game hit a limit. Start from where the problem shows: in Blockbench or in the game.

We collected these causes from Hytale’s docs and patch notes and from the Hytale Models plugin’s source, notes and issue tracker. We have not reproduced every case ourselves, so each one links to its source.

In Blockbench

The model opens, but the texture is missing

A .blockymodel holds no image and no file name for one. In desktop Blockbench the plugin looks beside the model for a PNG whose name starts with the model’s file name, a PNG called Texture.png, or a folder named after the model with _Textures on the end. If none is there, it asks how to import textures: Select Files picks the PNG, Select Folder picks a folder of them, and Skip opens the model unpainted.

The web app does not search for textures. Use Import Texture in the Textures panel. To have desktop Blockbench find a texture by itself next time, name it after the model, for example sword.blockymodel and sword.png. The match is case-sensitive: Sword.png does not match sword.blockymodel, and Texture.png needs a capital T.

The texture is on, but it looks stretched, blurred or offset

Check which format the model opened in. The plugin opens a file as Hytale Prop (32 pixels per block) when it says "format": "prop" or, without a format field, when it sits in a folder named Blocks; otherwise as Hytale Character (64 pixels per block). The plugin’s UV size check flags faces whose pixel density does not match.

Also check that you paired the model with its own PNG, at its original size. Each face’s area on the texture equals the face’s size, so a resized or swapped PNG lands on the wrong parts. The limits guide has the density rules.

The texture or UV panel disappears
Clicking the empty background can hide the texture and UV panels. It is reported as an open plugin issue (#158), not a fault in your file.
Blockbench warns about too many nodes
The Hytale Models plugin warns above 255 nodes, the most it says Hytale will display. Groups count, and so does every cube or quad except the first unrotated cube in each group. The node limit section explains the count.

In the game

The model does not appear at all

Work through these in order:

  1. The pack is installed: in the Mods folder, or in the world’s own mods folder, and enabled. Packs created in the Asset Editor are saved in the world you made them in (asset pack docs).
  2. The definition points at your file, not at the base game’s asset you copied it from.
  3. The model sits in a folder that field allows. An item’s Model, for example, takes files from Common/Blocks/, Common/Items/, Common/Resources/, Common/NPC/, Common/VFX/ or Common/Consumable/ (items reference).
  4. The model has 255 nodes or fewer, the plugin’s limit.
The model shows the missing texture
Check the texture path in the definition first: an item’s Texture, a block’s CustomModelTexture or a model asset’s Texture. Since Update 7, custom content that overflows a texture atlas also falls back to the missing texture and logs a warning, where it used to vanish without one. Atlases pack across up to 16 pages for blocks and 4 for everything else, so many large textures across many mods can still fill them. Keep each texture as small as the model needs.
The item icon is blank or unknown
An item’s Icon is a PNG in Common/Icons/ItemsGenerated/ or Common/Icons/Items/. Since Update 7, an icon that will not resolve falls back to the unknown item icon, so check that path.
The animation does not play

A .blockyanim moves nodes by name. If a node was renamed, the clip no longer finds it; Update 7 rebuilt most food models and renamed some animations, and warned that “Custom animations that reference the old node names may break.” Check too that the model’s animation set, or the block’s CustomModelAnimation, points at the clip (animations reference).

Two plugin notes explain motion that differs from Blockbench: scale, visibility and UV offset keyframes move only the shape, not its children, and a plugin issue reports UV offset keyframes stopping an NPC’s animation.

Questions

Why is my Hytale model’s texture missing in Blockbench?
A .blockymodel does not contain its texture. Desktop Blockbench only finds the PNG by itself when its name starts with the model’s file name, when it is called Texture.png, or when it sits in a folder named after the model with _Textures on the end. Otherwise load it with Select Files or the Textures panel.
Does the Blockbench web app load Hytale textures automatically?
No. The automatic texture search runs in desktop Blockbench only. In the web app, import the PNG from the Textures panel.
Why does my custom model not show up in Hytale?
Check that the asset pack is installed and enabled, that the definition points at your pack’s files and not the base game’s, that the model sits in a folder the definition allows, and that it has 255 nodes or fewer.
Why does my Hytale model show the missing texture?
Either the definition’s texture path is wrong, or the texture did not fit in the game’s texture atlas. Since Update 7, content that overflows an atlas falls back to the missing texture and logs a warning.
Why is my Hytale animation not playing?
A .blockyanim finds nodes by name, so a renamed node breaks it, and the model’s animation set has to point at the clip. Update 7 renamed some game nodes and animations, which broke custom animations that used the old names.

Facts checked on 17 October 2026 against Hytale’s posts and docs for 0.7.2 (Update 7) and the source of the Hytale Models plugin 0.11.0 for Blockbench, not tested in the game. Hytale renames files and nodes between updates, so check the patch notes for anything newer.
